The Piatra Teiului Rock is an isolated limestone formation near Poiana Largului, at the northern end of Lake Bicaz in Neamț County. Rising approximately 23 meters above the surrounding terrain, the rock stands beside the Bistrița River near the Poiana Largului Viaduct. Depending on the water level of the reservoir, its base is either surrounded by water or exposed on the former riverbed.
The formation is a surviving fragment of a limestone reef dating from the Cretaceous period, containing fossils of ancient marine organisms. Over millions of years, erosion wore away the surrounding rock, leaving the distinctive pillar standing alone in the valley. It was declared a natural monument in 1951 and is protected as a small geological reserve.
The rock is also known as the Devil’s Rock (Piatra Dracului), a name explained by a local legend in which the Devil carried a boulder from the Ceahlău Mountains to block the BistriÈ›a River. Caught by the approaching dawn, he dropped it in the valley and fled. Its present name refers to a linden tree that once grew near the top, where a cross now stands.
Piatra Teiului is clearly visible from the nearby Poiana Largului Viaduct and the surrounding roads. Its appearance changes considerably with the fluctuating level of Lake Bicaz, particularly when the receding water exposes the ground around its base.
