The Statue of Bishop Áron Márton (Statuia Episcopului Márton Áron) is a bronze sculptural group on Liberty Square in Miercurea Ciuc, commemorating the Roman Catholic Bishop of Alba Iulia, Áron Márton (1896-1980). Created by sculptor Zoltán Sárpátki and unveiled in 2016, the monument depicts the bishop administering the sacrament of confirmation to a young girl dressed in traditional Szekler clothing, accompanied by her godmother.
The monument was commissioned to mark the 120th anniversary of Márton’s birth, honoring his religious leadership and his resistance to persecution under the communist regime. Its design was developed by Zsolt Tövissi, while Sárpátki modeled the figures and prepared them for casting. The bronze sculptures were cast by Pál Sándor Lakatos in Kecskemét, Hungary, before being installed on Liberty Square. The unveiling took place on May 15, 2016, Pentecost Sunday, during a ceremony attended by religious leaders, local residents, and Hungarian President János Áder.
The three figures portray a confirmation ceremony, with the bishop facing the young girl as her godmother stands behind her. The scene recalls Márton’s pastoral visits to Catholic communities throughout Transylvania, where the administration of confirmation was an important part of his ministry. His imprisonment and subsequent restrictions under communist rule repeatedly interrupted these visits, making his return to public religious ceremonies especially meaningful to the faithful.
The monument stands on the eastern side of Liberty Square, near the Trade Unions’ House of Culture. It is the second public sculpture honoring Márton in Miercurea Ciuc, following a bronze bust unveiled in 1997 outside Áron Márton National College, where he had studied.
