The Public Garden (Grădina Publică) is a historic urban park in Galați, laid out in the mid-19th century and extending across a large green area in the northern part of the city center. Its broad paths, lawns, fountain and monuments make it one of the city’s principal public parks.
Plans for a public garden appeared as early as the 1840s, but substantial landscaping only began in the 1860s. The land was divided and prepared for planting, thousands of trees were introduced, and ornamental shrubs were brought from Austria and Turkey. By 1864, the garden had taken recognizable form under the supervision of pârcălab Iorgu Ghica, with later additions including a buffet pavilion, a music pavilion, fountains and greenhouses.
The park changed repeatedly during the 20th century as older features disappeared and new ones were introduced. Its central fountain dates from 1964 and was designed with a decorative marble mosaic by sculptor Nae Constantinescu, while busts of George Enescu and Ion Luca Caragiale stand near the main entrance. The Alexandru Ioan Cuza Monument is positioned immediately outside the park on Strada Domnească.
A major modernization in 2012-2013 renewed paths, lighting and recreational facilities while retaining the historic layout of the garden. Today the park combines open lawns, shaded paths, flowerbeds, seating, children’s play areas and outdoor fitness equipment, with the historic fountain and monuments providing the main points of interest during a walk through the grounds.
