The Nae Leonard National Opera and Operetta Theater (Teatrul Național de Operă și Operetă „Nae Leonard”) is a performing arts theater in Galați presenting opera, operetta, ballet, musicals, concerts and other music-based productions. Its resident artistic ensembles include an orchestra, choir and ballet company, with performances held in the theater’s 410-seat auditorium.
Professional musical theater in Galați developed during the 1950s, beginning with a municipal musical ensemble in 1954 and the creation of a state symphony orchestra the following year. This activity led to the establishment of the Regional Operetta and Variety Theater in 1956, providing the city with a permanent professional company for staged musical performances.
The new company quickly expanded its repertoire, presenting its first operetta in February 1957 and its first full opera, Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, that June. Opera, operetta, ballet, musical comedy and variety productions subsequently became established parts of the program, while the company also toured elsewhere in Romania and developed generations of singers, musicians and dancers.
In 1972, the theater was named after Galați-born tenor Nae Leonard, one of the best-known Romanian operetta performers of the early 20th century. The institution was known for many years as the Nae Leonard Musical Theater before receiving its present title, National Opera and Operetta Theater, in 2018.
The repertoire combines established operas and operettas with ballet, concerts, musicals and productions for younger audiences. Performances such as Carmen, La Traviata and other works from the international operatic repertoire appear alongside Romanian productions and lighter musical programs, while the annual Leonard International Festival brings together opera, operetta, ballet and concert performances.
