Danube Promenade (Faleza Dunării) is the main riverfront public space in Galați, stretching for several kilometers along the Danube. Broad pedestrian routes, green embankments and open views across the river make it one of the city’s most important places for walking, cycling and spending time outdoors.
The present waterfront was created through major redevelopment from the late 1960s, when the steep riverbank was reshaped and reinforced and new roads, paths and landscaped slopes were introduced. This work established the two-level form of the promenade, with an upper route along the city side and a lower level closer to the water. Large metal sculptures added during camps in 1976, 1977 and 1991 later became part of the riverfront landscape.
The two levels give the promenade a varied character along its length. The lower section feels more open and closer to the Danube, while the upper route follows the top of the embankment and provides broader views over the river. Wide stairways and sloping connections link the levels at several points, with lawns, planted areas and seating spread across the intervening slopes.
Different sections of the promenade range from open stretches beside the water to areas with cafés, terraces and floating restaurants moored along the Danube. The riverfront is popular for walking, jogging, cycling and outdoor exercise, while benches and landscaped areas provide quieter places to sit and enjoy the views.
