The Traian Demetrescu House (Casa Traian Demetrescu) is a historic residence dating from the mid-19th century in central Craiova, once home to the Romanian poet and journalist Traian Demetrescu (1866-1896). Known by the literary pseudonym Tradem, Demetrescu began publishing poetry as a young man and became a prominent figure in Romanian literary circles before his death at the age of 29.
The house was nationalized in 1950 and converted into a memorial museum dedicated to the poet in 1966. It subsequently became the headquarters of Craiova’s municipal House of Culture, established in the 1970s and renamed in Demetrescu’s honor in 1991. The building accommodated an exhibition devoted to the writer’s life and literary period, together with galleries and rooms used for exhibitions, literary meetings, and other cultural events.
Following restoration and consolidation completed in 2007, the building continued to host the Traian Demetrescu Culture House until 2024, when the municipality transferred the property to the Traian Demetrescu Kindergarten. The cultural institution was subsequently incorporated into the Colibri Theater for Children and Youth.
