The Romanescu Park Suspension Bridge (Podul Suspendat din Parcul Romanescu) is a historic pedestrian bridge spanning a wooded valley in the Nicolae Romanescu Park in Craiova. Built in 1902-1903, it is one of the park’s most distinctive architectural features, with an elevated metal walkway suspended between two monumental stone and brick gateways. The bridge was designed as part of the romantic landscape created by French landscape architect Édouard Redont, combining an unusual engineering structure with picturesque views across the park.
The bridge was constructed during the development of Nicolae Romanescu Park under Mayor Nicolae Romanescu. Its engineering design was prepared by Alfred Bellard of the French construction company G. Sohier, which received the contract in July 1902. Local contractors carried out the foundations and masonry work, while the suspension system allowed the walkway to cross the valley without intermediate supports. The design closely resembles the suspension bridge in Paris’s Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, designed by Gustave Eiffel in the 19th century.
The pedestrian walkway is approximately 50 meters long and two meters wide, suspended nearly ten meters above the valley below. At either end, the bridge passes through an ornamental gateway with crenellated towers, giving the structure a romantic medieval appearance. Metal suspension cables support the walkway, which is bordered by decorative railings.
The bridge underwent several repairs during the 20th century, but deterioration of its metal components and wooden walkway eventually required extensive restoration. It was closed to pedestrians in 2017 and reopened in 2020 following structural reinforcement and conservation work on its gateways, suspension system, and decorative elements.
