The Sailor’s Cross (Crucea Marinarilor) is a memorial on the Casino Promenade in Constanța, dedicated to Romanian sailors who died at sea. Unveiled in 1999, the monument stands close to the Black Sea and is used for naval commemorations and military ceremonies.
Plans for a national monument to Romanian sailors had existed since the interwar period. In 1939, the Romanian Naval League and the Cult of Heroes Association launched a public campaign for a memorial on the Constanța waterfront, but the project was abandoned as World War II approached. The idea was revived decades later, and the present cross was finally unveiled on December 1, 1999.
The monument is centered on a polished stone cross facing the sea. An inscription on its base is dedicated to Romanian sailors whose grave is the sea, reflecting the memorial’s purpose as a place for those lost without a burial on land.
The setting was expanded in 2015 with a semicircular memorial wall carrying 18 granite plaques. These list the names of 275 military and civilian sailors who died in service and whose bodies were never recovered, based on research in Romanian military archives.
The Sailor’s Cross continues to serve as one of Constanța’s main places of remembrance for the Romanian Navy. Ceremonies are held here in memory of sailors who died in war, training and naval service, particularly around Romanian Navy Day in August.
