The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral (Catedrala Adormirea Maicii Domnului), also called the Metropolitan Cathedral of Clu-Napoca (Catedrala Mitropolitană din Cluj-Napoca), is the largest and most important cathedral of Cluj-Napoca.
The Romanian-Orthodox cathedral was built between 1923 and 1933 in the Brâncovenesc style with some Renaissance and Byzantine influences. The main dome was inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and is surrounded by four towers. It is the seat of the Metropolitanate of Cluj, Alba, Crișana, and Maramureș, and the seat of the archbishop of Vad, Feleac, and Cluj. Between 1996 and 1999 the building underwent an extensive renovation of the exterior and inside it got a new Byzantine-style painting made of Murano mosaic.
Inside the cathedral, there is also a museum with a collection of religious and documentary art, including painted icons from the 17th-19th century, liturgical objects, cult objects, wood and glass icons, crosses, chalices, manuscripts, and documents of the history of the diocese.
The cathedral is located on Avram Iancu Square and in front of the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, you can find the monument “Glory of the Romanian Soldier” in memory of those who sacrificed themselves for the defence of their homeland. On the other side of the cathedral, there is a small park with a fountain with a statue of Avram Iancu in the middle.
