The Old Post Cultural Center (Centrul Cultural „Poșta Veche”) is a municipal cultural and educational venue housed in a restored 19th-century building in central Călărași. Formerly the city’s post, telephone, and telegraph office, the building now accommodates creative workshops, exhibitions, and activities dedicated to local history and culture.
The building was constructed in 1881 as the residence of landowner Iacovache Bădulescu. From 1913 to 1967, it housed the city’s post, telephone, and telegraph office, giving rise to the name Old Post Office. Following the relocation of the postal service, the property served several other functions, including boarding accommodation, court offices, and the marriage registry. The Bădulescu family donated it to the municipality in 1976, but subsequent changes of use and prolonged neglect led to serious deterioration.
Between 2018 and 2020, the building underwent extensive restoration, which restored its eclectic architectural character, including the symmetrical facade, decorative plasterwork, and elevated entrance. The interior was furnished with spaces for exhibitions, educational activities, and community events.
Operated by the Călărași Municipality, the cultural center organizes workshops in traditional baking, photography and video, creative crafts, and other practical activities. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and presentations about local history and personalities.
