Central Park (Parcul Central) is a historic public park along the Borcea branch of the Danube in Călărași. Its tree-lined paths extend toward a waterfront promenade with benches overlooking the river, while the grounds contain monuments, sculptures, children’s playgrounds, and terraces.
The park was developed between 1902 and 1904 on a formerly marshy stretch of the riverbank. King Carol I had encouraged the local authorities to improve the area after visiting Călărași and finding the neglected waterfront unsuitable for public recreation. The project was eventually undertaken during the administration of Mayor Constantin Ciochină, after whom the park was named for a period. Its creation was accompanied by the development of Bulevardul Traian and the construction of the Municipal Theater, making the area a center of public and cultural life in the early 20th century.
One of the park’s distinctive features is the Alley of Kings (Aleea Regilor), with busts of historical rulers including Burebista, Decebalus, Trajan, Michael the Brave, Ferdinand I, Queen Marie, and Michael I. Near the riverbank stands a memorial created by sculptor Gheorghe Boboc in 1913, commemorating sailors who died when the vessel Teleorman sank in the Borcea branch the previous year. The promenade also features modern metal sculptures, while the open views across the river and shaded walking paths form the main recreational areas of the park.
