The Călărași Water Tower (Turnul de Apă din Călărași) is a historic water-supply structure near the County Hospital in Călărași, built in the early 20th century as part of the modernization of the city’s public utilities. Now partly hidden behind apartment blocks, its solid cylindrical structure and castle-like appearance distinguish it from conventional water towers supported by exposed steel frameworks.
The project began taking shape in 1906, when Otto Tetenis donated land for the tower following negotiations led by Prefect Alexandru Bădulescu. Built in 1909 by the Wolf company, the tower formed part of a municipal utility complex that later included an electric power plant constructed in 1913 by the Austrian company Brown-Boveri.
The tower’s elevated reservoir supplied water to the municipal distribution network, using gravity to maintain pressure throughout the system. The water tower eventually ceased serving its original purpose, but its distinctive brick structure has survived amid the surrounding residential development.
