The National Operetta and Musical Theater Ion Dacian (Teatrul Național de Operetă și Musical Ion Dacian) is a theater on the banks of the Dâmbovița River in central Bucharest.
The history of operetta in Bucharest goes back to 1848 when the work “Baba Hârca” by Alexandru Flechtenmacher was performed. Its success marked the start of the development of operetta in the capital.
In 1950, the State Operetta Theater was established but in 1986 the theater building was demolished. Since then the institution has performed in the small hall of the National Theater Bucharest. In 2011, the construction of a new modern performance hall for the National Operetta and Musical Theater started.
The theater has a capacity of 550 seats, a foyer with a capacity of 100-150 seats, and several rehearsal rooms. It is named after Ion Dacian (1911-1981), a Romanian tenor and former director of the State Operetta Theater.
