The National Bank of Romania Museum is located inside the building of the National Bank of Romania (Banca Națională a României) in the historic Old Town of Bucharest.
Inside the museum, you can learn more about the history of the national bank, its role in Romanian history, and the history of the national currency. You can also see a large numismatic collection spanning over 2,500 years, including Romania’s oldest coin ever minted.
The National Bank of Romania was established in 1880 and the construction of the eclectic building with some neo-classical elements took place between 1884 and 1890. Between 1937 and 1944 a new wing was added to the building in neoclassical style, with rationalist influences, granite stairs, and huge Corinthian columns forming the façade. The museum is located in this new wing.
