The headquarters of the National Archives of Romania (Arhivele Naţionale ale României) is located in a historic building on Queen Elisabeth Boulevard, opposite Cișmigiu Garden in the center of Bucharest.
The National Archives of Romania, until 1996 known as the State Archives (Arhivele Statului), are part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. There is a regional branch in each of the 42 counties, and one in Bucharest, which also serves as the headquarters with a library containing over 70,000 books, and 50,000 newspapers and magazines.
The State Archives were initially located in the Mihai Vodă Monastery but were moved to the current building on Queen Elisabeth Boulevard in 1959, following new legislation on archiving and secularization. The building had already been constructed between 1885 and 1887 and previously served as the headquarters of the Official Gazette of Romania (Monitorul Oficial al României), the publishing house of the government.
