The Monument to the Heroes of the Air (Monumentul Eroilor Aerului) is a monument on Bulevardul Eroilor, on the corner of Kiseleff Park in Bucharest.
The sculptors Lidia Kotzebue and Iosif Fekete created the monument between 1928 and 1935 after their design won a public vote. The structure has a height of 20 meters and consists of bronze sculptures on a stone obelisk-shaped pedestal, which itself rests on four trapezoidal prisms.
The statue on top of the obelisk depicts a flying man with wings attached to his stretched-out arms and has a height of 5 meters and a weight of 5 tons. Three sculptures at the base of the obelisk each depict an aviator in a different stage of his attempt to fly. On the pedestal of the monument are the aviators’ insignia, helmets, and equipment. The names of Romanian airmen who had crashed to death up until the monument was created have been inscribed into the monument. This includes those who died during training, regular flights, military duty, and during the First World War. Later 99 additional names have been added on the back side of the monument.
