The Lady’s Church (Biserica Doamnei) is a Romanian Orthodox church, which is hidden behind apartment blocks in the old town of Bucharest.
The history of the church goes back several centuries as there has been several succesive churches in its location, probably from as early as the 15th century. The current church is named after the wife of the Wallachian prince Șerban Cantacuzino, lady Maria who erected the church.
The construction of the Lady’s Church was finished in 1683 and its appearance resembles the transition from the style used during Matei Baserab to the architecture with rich artistitc decorations during the reign of Constantin Brâncoveanu. In 1689, Maria dedicated the church to the Cotroceni Monastery founded by her husband.
The church has a rectangular plan with a porch which is supported by semicirular arches resting on stone columns. The church has a length of 26.5 meters and a width of 9 meters, and has very thick walls and a bell tower above the nartex. Inside the church there’s a fresco painting created by Constantinos and Ioan in the 17th century.
