The Hilton Garden Inn Bucharest Old Town is a hotel located in the former headquarters of the National Insurance Company (Societatea de Asigurări Naționala), a historic monument in the old town of Bucharest.
The building is located at the intersection of Strada Doamnei with Strada Smârdan and Strada Ion Ghica, where you can also find the National Bank of Romania, the Stock Exchange Palace, and the Spiru Haret University.
History Of The Building
Established in 1882, “NaÈ›ionala” was one of the first insurance companies in Romania, after the Dacia-Romania Insurance Company. The building, which would become their headquarters, was designed by the Austro-Hungarian architect Adolf Láng, and its construction was finished in 1886. Initially, the building only had one floor, but it was later extended with three more floors. Over time many different shops and other companies have been operating on the premises but untimately the building was abandoned and got into severe decay. In recent years the abandoned building got an extensive renovation and was transformed into a Hilton hotel.
