The building of the former Communal Society for Cheap Housing (Societatea Comunală pentru Locuințe Ieftine) is a historic monument at the intersection of Carol I Boulevard and Bulevardul Hristo Botev in Bucharest.
The Communal Society for Cheap Housing was established in 1911 with the aim of improving the living conditions of workers in Bucharest by constructing housing blocks for them. The organization remained active until the Communist regime took power in 1948. In this period 24 plots of land had been turned into 4,000 homes.
The organization was initially located in the Stock Exchange Palace until it had developed its own premises. The headquarters of the Communal Society for Cheap Housing was designed by the architect Virginia Haret and constructed between 1926 and 1927. The building has an Eclectic style with Neo-Romanian elements. The facade of the building is decorated with pilasters, and the single last floor features balconies, which breaks the facades’ monotony.
