The Church Of Saint Pantelimon (Biserica Sfântul Pantelimon) is a Romanian Orthodox church located near the Fire Tower of Bucharest. The church is therefore sometimes also referred to as the Fire Tower Church.
Initially, a wooden church existed in its place until 1790, when it was replaced with a stone church. In 1838 an earthquake destroyed the church so badly, that in 1866 it was decided to demolish it and build a completely new church.
The new church as we know it today was designed by the architect Nae Cucu and its construction took place between 1872 and 1876. During World War I, the German occupants confiscated the church bell. After the war, between 1921 and 1926 restoration works were carried out whereby the open porch was added in front of the entrance and stained glass windows were installed.
Another restoration took place after the 1940 earthquake and a new bell was installed in 1943, to replace the bell that had been stolen. After the 1977 earthquake, more restorations were done which included the replacement of the pediment. Further restorations took place after fire broke out in the church in 2012.
