The Șchei Gate (Poarta Șchei) was an entrance gate and part of the fortifications of the historic citadel of Brașov.
The Șchei Gate was built between 1827 and 1828 in order to cope with the increased traffic in and out of the citadel of Brașov as trade was booming at that time. The Șchei Gate was built close to the older Catherine’s Gate which had been the only entrance gate between the citadel and the Șchei district until then.
The new gate was made of stone and bricks in a neoclassical style, like a triumphal arch with one large opening in the middle for traffic, and two smaller openings on the sides for pedestrians.
Șchei Gate was declared a monument in 1955. After it got damaged by an earthquake in 1977 restoration works took place which included a replacement of the roof structure.
