The Youth House (Casa Tineretului) is a cultural and performance venue in Brăila, located beside Independence Square. Also known as the Youth Palace (Palatul Tineretului), it forms part of the city’s modern civic center, developed during the communist period.
The building was designed in 1982 by architects Doina Barbu and Virgil Barbu of the Brăila Design Institute. During a visit to the city, Nicolae Ceaușescu reportedly requested that its design resemble the neighboring Palace of Agriculture, a much older building in the Neo-Romanian style. The proposal was subsequently reviewed by architect Cezar Lăzărescu, who supported the original design and allowed the project to proceed.
Construction took place during the late 1980s, although the complex was reportedly not completed until 1994. Designed as a multipurpose cultural center, it included a 450-seat performance hall, club rooms, two discotheques, a gymnasium, a hotel, and a restaurant. The Panait Istrati County Library was also temporarily housed in part of the building.
The main performance hall is used for concerts, theater productions, festivals, and other cultural events, including performances by the Lyra-George Cavadia Philharmonic. The building’s modernist architecture and its position beside the older Palace of Agriculture illustrate the contrasting architectural styles brought together during the expansion of Brăila’s civic center.
