The Orthodox Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God (Biserica Ortodoxă Adormirea Maicii Domnului) is a Romanian Orthodox church in Brăila, built between 1909 and 1914 on the site of an earlier nineteenth-century church. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it combines Byzantine architectural forms with Neo-Romanian decorative details.
The first church on the site was built between 1844 and 1847, with the approval of Bishop Chesarie of Buzău. It served the parish for nearly fifty years before being destroyed by a fire in 1895, reportedly started accidentally by workers repairing its roof. A temporary wooden chapel was erected in its place, allowing religious services to continue while the congregation raised funds for a permanent replacement.
Construction of the present church began on May 31, 1909, under parish priest Ilie Didicescu, with assistance from priest Ioan Nicolau and local benefactors. Designed by architect Mihail S. Nicolescu and built by Dumitru Dumitrescu, it was completed in April 1914 and consecrated that same year. The relatively compact brick building has a traditional three-apsed plan, with a central dome above the nave and two bell towers on its western side. Its exterior combines Byzantine forms with Neo-Romanian ornamentation, while the interior was painted by V. C. Robea, who also decorated the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Brăila.
Among the church’s furnishings are silver-covered icons depicting the Virgin Mary and other religious subjects, together with an embroidered epitaph portraying the Assumption of the Mother of God. The interior paintings and building have undergone restoration over the years, preserving the decoration of the early twentieth-century church.
The parish also operates charitable and educational programs. A medical practice provides healthcare services for people in need, while the Familia parish kindergarten, established in 2001, supports children from disadvantaged families, including those requiring additional educational assistance. The church celebrates its patronal feast on August 15, when parishioners gather for special services honoring the Virgin Mary.
