Monument Park (Parcul Monument) is a large public park in southwestern Brăila, with dense tree cover, walking paths, recreational areas, and sports facilities. Developed during the nineteenth century, it takes its name from a monument commemorating the Russian victory over Ottoman forces at Brăila in 1828, which once stood on what was then the outskirts of the city.
The monument was erected in 1833 under the Russian administration of General Pavel Kiseleff, on the site where a cannonball had reportedly landed near Tsar Nicholas I during his inspection of the Ottoman fortifications. It consisted of an obelisk decorated with imperial eagles, captured cannons, and a cross above a crescent, commemorating the end of Ottoman rule in Brăila. The surrounding land gradually developed into a public garden, with paths and tree planting undertaken throughout the nineteenth century. Although the monument was destroyed by Ottoman troops during the occupation of Brăila in World War I, the park retained its name.
As the park expanded, it developed into a recreational area with an extensive sports complex along its northern and eastern edges. This includes Brăila Municipal Stadium, a separate athletics track, the multipurpose indoor arena (Sala Polivalentă), swimming facilities, and grounds used by the local sports high school. The Museum of Natural History also occupies a building in the park.
The rest of Monument Park is characterized by dense trees, broad alleys, smaller paths, and occasional clearings. Playgrounds, benches, and open recreational spaces are scattered through the park, providing room for walking and outdoor activities away from the larger sports facilities.
