Holy Trinity Baptist Church (Biserica Creștină Baptistă Sfânta Treime) is a modern place of worship in central Brăila, inaugurated in 1997. It serves one of the city’s established Baptist congregations and is also involved in religious education, community activities, and charitable work.
Baptist Christianity had gained a foothold in Brăila by the early twentieth century, when the city already had an organized congregation that attracted believers from the surrounding region. In 1924, twelve converts were baptized in Brăila, including a couple from Galați who subsequently helped establish the first Baptist church in that city. Like other religious denominations, Baptists faced restrictions under Romania’s communist government, particularly on religious gatherings and the construction of new places of worship. Religious freedom expanded following the fall of communism in 1989, and in 1997 the Holy Trinity congregation inaugurated its present church building.
The church was designed around a large worship hall, where preaching, prayer, and congregational singing form the central elements of its services. Music has an important place in Baptist worship, with choirs and instrumental performances accompanying religious celebrations. The building also accommodates Bible study, meetings, and educational activities, while concerts and conferences occasionally bring together participants from other Baptist congregations.
The church’s development during the 1990s also led to a medical initiative under pastor Iosif Ștefănuți. With support from a Christian organization in the United States, he helped establish the Diaconia Medical Center in 1997, initially operating from a converted house with a consultation room and laboratory. The project expanded through international medical partnerships and volunteer teams, eventually leading to the construction of a larger clinic beside the church, completed in 2008. The center developed into a multidisciplinary healthcare institution serving patients from Brăila and the surrounding area.
