The Saint Spyridon Church (Biserica Sfântul Spiridon) is an Eastern Orthodox church in Botoșani built in 1789 on the site of an earlier wooden church. Founded by the city’s furriers’ guild, it was consecrated in 1801 by Metropolitan Iacob Stamate and later enlarged several times during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The church was originally smaller than the building seen today. Its present iconostasis was installed in 1834, and in 1868 the church was extended westward with an enclosed porch while the altar, nave and narthex were raised above the original 18th-century cornice. Further changes followed in 1909, when the tower above the nave was altered, a small southern porch was added and the present choir gallery was constructed.
Despite these later changes, the church retains a traditional trilobed plan with the altar, nave and narthex arranged beneath a prominent central tower. The brick walls rest on a river-stone foundation, while the octagonal tower has Baroque influences and is covered with scale-patterned metal sheeting. Decorative brickwork remains visible along the exterior, including a toothed band around the façades and pointed-arch motifs between the middle band and cornice.
A separate bell tower was built in 1817 and raised by another level in 1860, when the present bell chamber with engaged columns and a projecting cornice was added. The church interior received its first major painted decoration between 1913 and 1916, although those oil paintings later deteriorated beyond repair. A new fresco cycle was completed between 2010 and 2011 during a wider restoration of the church.
