The Monument to the 1907 Uprising (Monumentul Răscoalei de la 1907) is a monumental sculpture in Botoșani commemorating the Romanian Peasants’ Revolt of 1907, which began at Flămânzi in Botoșani County before spreading across much of the country. Created by sculptor Gavril Covalschi in 1978, the monument stands beside Mihai Eminescu Park.
Covalschi had first won a competition for the monument in 1957, but the full work was not installed until more than two decades later. The ensemble was completed in 1978 and unveiled in 1979.
The monument is arranged as three large sculptural groups, with the central section showing peasants rising in revolt, armed with tools such as scythes and pitchforks. The side sections depict scenes from rural life, including farming, animal husbandry, crafts and domestic work. Together, the three parts connect the uprising with the everyday life of the peasant communities from which it emerged.
The revolt itself began in February 1907 on the Flămânzi estate, where disputes over land leases and the conditions imposed on tenant farmers triggered unrest that soon spread through Moldavia and then across Romania. The government eventually suppressed the uprising with military force, leaving large numbers of peasants dead.
