Church of Saint Basil the Great (Biserica Sfântul Vasile cel Mare) is a modern Orthodox church in Botoșani, standing in the grounds of Mavromati County Hospital. Built between 1997 and 2008, it was originally intended primarily for hospital patients and later became the church of a separate parish serving the surrounding area.
Construction began in 1997 under priest Petru Chirvasă, and services started before the building was completely finished. The parish was established in 2006, while work on the church continued until 2008. After the interior decoration was completed, the church was consecrated on October 24, 2010 by Metropolitan Teofan of Moldavia and Bucovina. A fragment of the relics of Saint Basil the Great was brought from the Three Hierarchs Monastery in Iași for the consecration and remained in the church.
Architect Bogdan Negoiță designed the building in a Byzantine style with Greek influences, using a centralized plan that gathers the congregation around the interior space facing the altar. An open portico precedes the entrance, with the choir gallery above, while the sanctuary and adjoining liturgical spaces form three projecting sections at the eastern end. The interior is covered with religious painting, including the large central dome.
An unusual feature lies beneath the church, where priest Petru Chirvasă created a small ethnographic museum in a space originally intended for storage. Arranged as a traditional rural home, its rooms contain furniture, household objects, textiles, tools, ceramics and old icons gathered through donations and collections over the years.
