The Resurrection Cathedral of Oradea (Catedrala ÃŽnvierea Domnului din Oradea) is the cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Episcope of Oradea and is located between the Oradea Fortress and December 1st Park in Oradea, Bihor County. It is also the largest church in the city.
The foundation stone of the cathedral was laid by Patriarch Teoctist on 5 June 1995 and the first liturgy took place in the unfinished building on the Feast of the Resurrection in 2012. After its completion, the inauguration of the Resurrection Cathedral took place on 20 September 2020.
The cathedral is built in the style of the churches of Stephen the Great and is decorated with Byzantine mosaics inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The enormous structure occupies a space of 1,422 square meters and reaches a height of 65 meters, including the cross. The external walls of the cathedral are clad with red marble and Podeni stone and the internal floors are made of Kavala marble. Its main facade is adorned with a mosaic depicting the icon of the Resurrection.
Before the new Resurrection Cathedral was built, the Moon Church on Union Square functioned as the Orthodox Episcopal Cathedral. The new edifice is therefore also nicknamed the ‘Sun Cathedral’.
