When you visit Bucharest, the first thing you probably do is head down to the old town because this is the center right? When you stroll around the cobbled street and take in the views of the historic buildings you’ll see bar after bar and restaurant after restaurant, so when you get hungry or thirsty you’ll have an abundance of options to choose from. But what you don’t see are the hidden gems, the places the locals know about, but many tourist simply never find.

Some of these places are hidden on the rooftops of the city and you simply walk past by them without knowing it. And that’s a pity, because some of them have amazing views over the city, or are too cool to miss. So in this guide we’ll take you to the best rooftop and sky bars, so you can have a drink under the sun (or the moon), while enjoying the best views of Bucharest.

1. Nomad Skybar

Let’s start in the old town in case you’re already there and wonder what we’re talking about. Between the bars on Smârdan Street you can see a big neon sign pointing you to an elevator which takes you straight up to Nomad Skybar. The modern establishment has a hip indoor space which looks like garden. There’s a narrow outdoor strip overlooking the street and in the end there’s a straircase which leads to a terrace. The place definitely combines the charms of a hidden trendy bar with the vibes of the streets of the old town.

2. Linea / Closer To The Moon

Strada Lipscani is the most famous street in the old town and if you follow it to the east and cross Victory Boulevard you will see an astronaut where you can find an elevator which takes you to the moon (and back). Your first stop is at the indoor area of Linea / Closer to the Moon, which is like a modern indoor garden, but here you don’t have a view. Get up the stairs to the bar on the roof for that top of the world feeling. You can see the CEC Palace and the beautiful building of the police and if you walk to the end you’ll also get a glimpse of the Palace of the Parliament.

3. Naive

Naive is another cool place which you can find just right in the old town, on top of the Magazinul București building. It’s another hip and trendy bar with an outdoor space overlooking Rome Square.

4. Deschis Gastrobar

Deschis means ‘open’ which refers to their open rooftop terrace with views over the Dâmbovița River. They also have a large and trendy indoor lounge and serve anything from a late breakfast or brunch to dinner options accompanied with an extensive menu of coctails and other drinks.

5. SkyBar

SkyBar is definitely a hidden gem which you could easily skip as it’s not located in the old town, but on top of one of the many buildings on the long Dorobanți Road. The bar and restaurant has decent views over parts of the city from the 5th floor.

6. Balkon Resto Garden

Balkon Resto Garden is located on Victory Boulevard, the first road that was ever paved and which is still one of the most important streets in the city. It might not offer the best views, but it’s one of the only rooftop bars in this street. The modern place is a popular bar and restaurant and neatly fits in with the vibes of the trendy neighborhood.

7. Amethyst Sky Bar

Amethist Sky Bar is located on the top floor of the Union Plaza Hotel and offers one of the most spectacular views over the center of Bucharest. The restaurant, which serves contemporary food, looks out over Union Boulevard, the longest in Europe, with the Palace of the Parliament at the end.

8. The After Five

For a closer look at the Palace of the Parliament and the People’s Salvation Cathedral you should get to The Afer Five, located on the banks of the Dâmbovița River. It’s a 20 minute walk from the old town, but the bar has an extensive drinks menu, serves great sushi, and has one of the best views.

9. Aria TNB

Aria TNB is literally hiding in plain view as only few people know that this restaurant and bar is located on the roof of the National Theater Bucharest, and is accessable without a theater ticket. The entrance is to the left of the main theater entrance, where an elevator takes you to the 3rd floor where you can sit either indoors or outdoors. The outdoor garden has a great view over University Square and during weekends, djs spice up the athmosphere in the bar area.

10. 18 Lounge

You might think that this is just a normal office building, but what you don’t see from the outside is that a restaurant with one of the best views of the city is hiding on its 18th Floor. 18 Lounge is a chic contemporary restaurant where you can sit indoors or outdoors on the panorama deck.

11. NOR Sky Casual Restaurant

The last place on this list is definitely not the least, as we saved it for the most breathtaking view. NOR Sky Casual Restaurant is located on the 36th floor of the Sky Tower, the tallest building in Bucharest and Romania. The panoramic views over the King Michael I Park and Herăstrău Lake are absolutely stunning from this skyscraper and the food is impeccable in this chic restaurant.
